French pianist Marco Poingt and Cuban trumpeter Carlos Sarduy come together on “Calypso”, an album where contemporary jazz, improvisation and Afro-Cuban influences meet with a remarkable sense of freedom. Fifteen tracks, two distinct artistic sensibilities and a musical connection that began in Havana and took shape in Barcelona.
Some musical encounters do not end with the final note. They continue, evolve and sometimes become an album. This is the story behind “Calypso”, the new recording by French pianist Marco Poingt and Cuban trumpeter Carlos Sarduy, now available on major streaming platforms.
The two musicians first met in Cuba during a jazz festival and later reconnected in Barcelona. That artistic connection grew into a recording project that moves beyond stylistic boundaries, making room for improvisation, rhythm and creative freedom.
Across fifteen tracks, original compositions and reinterpretations explore a wide range of musical landscapes. Les Feuilles mortes and Les Moulins de mon cœur evoke the melodic elegance of French chanson, while Evocación al Chan Chan, Recuerdo de la Habana and Changüí Calypso open up different sonic territories, shaped by the rhythms and expressive character of Cuban music.
Beyond the interplay between piano and trumpet, “Calypso” also reveals the versatility of both artists. Marco Poingt explores bass and organ, while Carlos Sarduy expands his musical palette through vocals and percussion. Their exchange takes on a dimension that reaches beyond the conventional jazz duo format.
Marco Poingt, a French pianist and composer with an international career, has developed a distinctive musical language that brings together jazz, classical music and experimentation. Carlos Sarduy, a Cuban trumpeter, composer and percussionist, is an established figure on the international jazz scene, admired for his expressive playing and his ability to move effortlessly between musical traditions.
Romanian audiences are also familiar with Carlos Sarduy, who has performed to great acclaim at two editions of the Sibiu Jazz Festival, leaving a lasting impression on jazz enthusiasts.
Recorded entirely at Studio MeloProd in Agen, France, by Mathieu Daugareil and Emmanuel Feramus, the album was mixed and mastered by Simon Derasse at Studio d’Estrade. Particular attention was given to sonic depth and spatial detail, with the aim of creating an immersive listening experience.
“Calypso” does not set out to prove that two musical worlds can coexist. It simply brings them into conversation, guided by the personalities of two artists for whom music remains, above all, a space of freedom.
The album is available on Spotify, Apple Music, Deezer and other major digital platforms.
